Meeting on the national protection mechanism

The environment for human rights defenders in Mexico is characterised by high levels of risk and attack. Protection International’s Mexican partner Acción Urgente para los Defensores de los Derechos Humanos (ACUDDEH – Urgent Action for Human Rights Defenders), provides different types of training to human rights defenders who are at risk; Security and protection management training for human rights defenders, Training of trainers on capacity building of security and protection management for human rights organisations, and training for defenders on how to confront psychosocial impacts caused by threats and different types of aggressions.

Protection International and ACUDDEH’s collaboration in Protection Desk Mexico focused successfully on the Ley para la Protección de Personas Defensoras de Derechos Humanos y Periodistas (Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists). The Desk has been advising the Ministry for Interior (SEGOB) and authorities of the State of Chihuahua on national protection policies. It will monitor the implementation of the Law and equally invest in initiatives for parallel, civil-society-run protection mechanisms.

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders reports about the context in Mexico in its annual report. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch describe the general human rights situation in Mexico in their respective annual reports.
